《舊約?詩(shī)篇》(Psalm)第17章有這樣的句子："Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of the wings"（求你保護(hù)我，如同保護(hù)眼中的瞳孔。）正因?yàn)檫@一典故，大約從9世紀(jì)開(kāi)始，短語(yǔ)“the apple of one's eye”（掌上明珠）被人們廣泛使用。

例如：

美國(guó)總統(tǒng)西奧多?羅斯福提出的武力威脅及戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)訛詐的外交政策。他曾在一次演說(shuō)中援引了一句非洲諺語(yǔ)：手持大棒口如蜜，走遍天涯不著急，來(lái)說(shuō)明他任內(nèi)的外交政策，后來(lái)就發(fā)展成所謂的大棒加胡蘿卜政策。
