Arizona State University’s Paul Davies, speaking at the Penn Club in New York City. "I don’t think we need to cure cancer. In fact, I don’t really think of cancer as a disease as much as an ___1___ form of living matter. We don’t need to cure it, we just need to ___2___ for long enough that people die of something else."
The cosmologist was asked to study cancer by the National Cancer Institute. “When cancer cells spread around the body, this is a ___3___. These cells are microscopic bodies being swept along in this raging torrent. They wriggle around, they latch on to surfaces, they ___4___ their way through. This is the sort of language that physicists and engineers can understand. Cancer research is ___5___ by genetics and biochemistry. That’s why we have the therapies, genetic and chemotherapy, as the main approaches. I think that we can open up a whole new frontier just by thinking about the problem in a totally different way.

亞利桑那州立大學(xué)的保羅?戴維斯于紐約城佩恩俱樂(lè)部發(fā)表演說(shuō):“只有10%的患者死于原發(fā)性腫瘤,腫瘤擴(kuò)散才是真正的難題。我覺(jué)得我們沒(méi)有必要治愈癌癥,事實(shí)上,我并不把癌癥看成一種疾病,而把它看成一種生命存在形式。我們沒(méi)必要治愈它,只要能夠在人們有生之年控制好它就行了。”
這位宇宙學(xué)家受邀于美國(guó)國(guó)家癌癥研究所進(jìn)行癌癥研究。他說(shuō):“癌細(xì)胞擴(kuò)散是一個(gè)物理問(wèn)題。這些細(xì)胞是隨洶涌洪流攢動(dòng)的微觀物質(zhì)。它們?cè)谌梭w內(nèi)蠕動(dòng),附著在器官或組織表面,鉆洞取徑。這些都是物理學(xué)家、工程師能看得懂的。而正因?yàn)榘┌Y研究由基因、生化主導(dǎo),基因治療以及化療才成為了主要的治療手段。我認(rèn)為,只要我們能從一個(gè)不同的角度思考這個(gè)問(wèn)題,就能開拓一個(gè)全新的領(lǐng)域。”
