Survivors and families of the Hong Kong hostages, killed during a botched rescue attempt in the Philippines last year, are in Manila to mark the first anniversary of the incident. On Tuesday, they held a Buddhist ceremony in remembrance of the victims, at the scene of the hijack.

Tse Chi Hang, a hostage victim's brother, said, "We are very upset because whenever I look at his picture, I would think of the time when he was with us, and having dinner together, and he always talk about his experience as a tour guide, and his love, and his voice, so we'll never forget. We will continue to fight for my brother, to fight for the justice."

The group is demanding a public apology from the Philippines government, along with compensation for the victims' families. They also want to see officials held to account over what they say were mistakes during the rescue attempt. However, during a meeting with representatives from the group, the Filipino Justice Secretary said she was unable to apologize on behalf of the government.

On August 23rd last year, a bus was hijacked in Manila by a former policeman. The gunman later opened fire on the passengers, following hours of unsuccessful negotiations... prompting police to storm the bus. Eight tourists died in the shooting. The Philippines' Interior Secretary maintains that police did not kill any of the hostages. No one has yet been held criminally responsible for the rescue operation, although one official has been fired.
