In a warm and sultry forest far, far away, there once lived a mother fruit bat and her new baby.

Oh, how Mother Bat loved her soft tiny baby. " I'll name you Stellaluna," she crooned.

Each night, Mother Bat would carry Stellaluna clutched to her breast as she flew out to search for food.

One night, as Mother Bat followed the heavy scent of ripe fruit, an owl spied her.
有一天晚上，蝙蝠媽媽聞到濃濃的水果香，就朝著那香味飛過去。這時，一只貓頭鷹盯上了她。

On silent wings the powerful bird swooped down upon the bats.
這只強(qiáng)壯的大鳥靜悄悄往下飛，沖向星月和媽媽。

Dodging and shrieking, Mother Bat tried to escape, but the owl struck again and again, knocking Stellaluna into the air.
蝙蝠媽媽極力閃躲，在慌忙中不斷驚叫，努力脫逃。但是，貓頭鷹卻一次又一次的攻擊，將星月?lián)袈溆谝箍罩小?/div>

Her baby wings were as limp and useless as wet paper.

Down, down she went, faster and faster, into the forest below.

The dark leafy tangle of branches caught Stellaluna as she fell.
濃密繁茂的枝葉，接住了掉下來的星月。

One twig was small enough for Stellaluna's tiny feet.
星月的小腳，抓住一根細(xì)細(xì)的嫩枝。?

Wrapping her wings about her, she clutched the thin branch, trembling with cold and fear.
她用翅膀把身體圍起來，就這樣掛在小樹枝上，又冷又怕，一直發(fā)抖。

"Mother," Stellaluna squeaked. "Where are you?"
“媽媽！”星月呼喚著：“你在哪里??？”

By daybreak, the baby bat could hold on no longer. Down, down again she dropped.
清晨第一道陽光出現(xiàn)的時候，星月再也支撐不住了，她又往下墜落...

Flump! Stellaluna landed headfirst in a soft downy nest, starting the three baby birds who lived there.
噗嚕！星月一頭栽進(jìn)了一個軟綿綿的鳥巢里，把里面的三支小鳥嚇了一跳！

Stellaluna quickly clambered from the nest and hung out of sight below it.
星月趕緊爬出去，倒掛在鳥巢下。

She listened to the babble of the three birds. "What was that?" cried Flap.
仔細(xì)聽著三只小鳥吱吱喳喳的對話， “那是什么呀？”飛飛叫著說。

" I don't know, but it's hanging by its feet," chirped Flitter. " Shhh! Here comes Mama," hissed Pip.

Many, many times that day Mama Bird flew away, always returning with food for her babies.
那一天，鳥媽媽來來回回、飛進(jìn)飛出許多次，每一次都帶著食物回來給她的寶寶。

Stellaluna was terribly hungry - but not for the crawly things Mama Bird brought.
星月實(shí)在是餓極了！可是她不吃鳥媽媽帶回來的那種會爬動的東西。

Finally, though, the little bat could bear it no longer. She climbed into the nest.
最后，星月實(shí)在餓得熬不住了。她爬進(jìn)鳥巢。

Closed her eyes, and opened her mouth.
閉上雙眼，張開了嘴巴。

Flop! In dropped a big green grasshopper!
啪！掉進(jìn)來一只綠色的大蚱蜢！

Stellaluna learned to be like the birds.
星月開始試著當(dāng)一只鳥。

She stayed awake all day slept at night.
白天保持清醒，夜晚時睡覺。

She ate bugs even though they tasted awful.
她也吃蟲子了，雖然那味道實(shí)在惡心。

Her bat ways quickly disappearing.Except for one thing: Stellaluna still liked to sleep hanging by her feet.
星月愈來愈不象一只蝙蝠，唯一沒變的是：星月還是喜歡用腳倒掛著睡覺。

Once, when Mama was away, the curious baby birds decided to try it, too.
有一次鳥媽媽出去，這些好奇的小鳥們決定試一試倒掛的滋味。

When Mama Bird came home she saw eight tiny feet gripping the edge of the nest.
鳥媽媽回來時，赫然看見有八只小小的腳倒勾住鳥巢。

"Eeeek!" she cried. " Get back up here this instant! You're going to fall and break your necks!"
“咿－喀！”鳥媽媽失聲尖叫：“立刻上來！要是掉下去，脖子會摔斷！”

The birds clambered back into the nest, but Mama Bird stopped Stellaluna.
三只小鳥爬回巢里。但是，鳥媽媽擋住星月。

" You are teaching my children to do bad things.
"你教我的孩子做不好的事。

I will not let you back into this nest unless you promise to obey all the rules of this house."
除非你答應(yīng)我，遵守這個家所有的規(guī)矩，否則，我不讓你回來。"?

Stellaluna promised. She ate bugs without making faces.
星月答應(yīng)了，從此以后，她吃蟲子時，不再做鬼臉。

She slept in the nest at night. And she didn't hang by her feet.
晚上也睡在鳥巢里，不再倒掛在外面。

Stellaluna behaved as a good bird should.
星月變得像一只乖巧的小鳥了。

All the babies grew quickly. Soon the nest became crowded.
這些小寶貝們都長得好快，不久鳥巢就變得好擠。

Mama Bird told them it was time to learn to fly.
鳥媽媽覺得他們應(yīng)該學(xué)飛了。

One by one, Pip, Flitter, Flap, and Stellaluna jumped from the nest.
起先是皮皮、翔翔，然后是飛飛和星月，一個一個跳出了鳥巢。

Their wings worked! I'm just like them, thought Stellaluna. I can fly, too.
他們的翅膀能飛。星月心里想：我和他們一樣；他們能飛，我也能飛。

I will fly all day, Stellaluna told herself.

The next day, Pip, Flitter, Flap, and Stellaluna went flying far from home.
第二天，皮皮、飛飛、翔翔，和星月從家里飛出來，飛得好遠(yuǎn)好遠(yuǎn)。

They flew for hours, exercising their new wings.
一連飛行了好幾個小時，鍛煉他們新生的翅膀。

"The sun is setting," warned Flitter. "We had better go home or we will get lost in the dark," said Flap.
“太陽快下山了！”飛飛警告大家?！拔覀冏詈泌s快回家，要不然天黑了會迷路。”翔翔說。

But Stellaluna had flown far ahead and was nowhere to be seen.
但是星月遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)的飛在前頭，不見了蹤影。

The three anxious birds went home without her.
三只小鳥雖然很擔(dān)心，也只好丟下她回家去了。

?All alone,Stellaluna flew and flew until her wings ached and she dropped into a tree.
星月獨(dú)自不停的飛、不停 的飛，飛到翅膀酸痛，摔落在一棵樹上。

" I promised not to hang by my feet," Stellaluna sighed.
星月嘆了一口氣說：我曾經(jīng)答應(yīng)鳥媽媽，不再用腳倒掛。

So she hung by her thumbs and soon feel asleep.
于是，她只好用大拇指勾住樹枝，把自己掛起來，而且很快就睡著了。

She didn't hear the soft sound of wings coming near.
她沒有聽到輕柔的拍翅聲，由遠(yuǎn)而近的靠了過來。

"Hey!" a loud voice said." Why are you hanging upside down?"
?“嗨！”一個響亮的聲音問：“你怎么倒掛著啊？”

Stellaluna's eyes opened wide. She saw a most peculiar face.
星月的眼睛瞪得大大的，她看見了一張非常奇怪的臉。

"I'm not upside down, you are!" Stellaluna said.?
“倒掛的不是我，是你吧！”星月說。

"Ah, but you're a bat. Bats hang by their feet. "
“是嗎？可是你是一只蝙蝠呀！蝙蝠都是頭朝下，用腳掛在樹上?！?/div>

You are hanging by your thumbs, so that makes you upside down!"
而你用大拇指勾住樹枝，站在樹枝上，所以你當(dāng)然是倒掛得咯！

the creature said. “I’m a bat I am hanging by my feel. That makes me right side up!"?
他接著又說：“而我是一只蝙蝠，當(dāng)然用腳掛在樹上！”

Stellaluna was confused. “Mama Bird told me I was upside down.She said I was wrong ...
星月聽了很迷惑，心想：鳥媽媽說我是倒掛；她說，我這樣是錯的。

?“Wrong for a bird, maybe, but not for a bat."
對鳥來說，也許是錯的；對蝙蝠來說，卻沒錯！

?More bats gathered around to see the strange young bat who behaved like a bird.
許多蝙蝠都圍了過來，爭著要看這只的小蝙蝠－－她的行為舉止像 一只鳥！

Stellaluna told them her story."You ate b-bugs?" stuttered one.
星月告訴大家她的遭遇?！澳愠浴⒊?、吃蟲子嗎？”一只蝙蝠結(jié)結(jié)巴巴的說。

" You slept at night?" gasped another.
“你在晚上睡覺嗎？”另一只蝙蝠倒抽一口涼氣說。

"How very strange," they all murmured.
“真是太奇怪了！”所有的蝙蝠都交頭接耳的談?wù)撝?/div>

"Wait! Wait! Let me look at this child." A bat pushed through the crowd.
“等一等！讓我看看這孩子?！币恢或鸢汛蠹彝崎_，擠到星月面前。

"An owl attacked you?" she asked. Sniffing Stellalunas fur, she whispered, " You are Stellaluna. You are my baby."
她問星月：“你說有一只貓頭鷹攻擊你？”她聞了聞星月的皮毛后，輕輕的說：“你是星月！你是我的寶貝！”?

You escaped the ow!'!" cried Stellaluna. " You survived?"?
“媽媽！”星月哭 著問：“你沒有被貓頭鷹抓去嗎？你還活著！”

"Yes," said Mother Bat as she wrapped her wings around Stellaluna.
“是的，我還活著。”蝙蝠媽媽一邊回答，一邊用雙翼緊緊抱住星月！

"Come with me and I'll show you where to find the most delicious fruit.
蝙蝠媽媽對星月說：“跟我來，我?guī)闳コ允澜缟献羁煽诘乃?/div>

You'll never have to eat another bug as long as you live."
你這輩子再也不用吃蟲子了。”

"But it's nighttime," Stellaluna squeaked. " We can't fly in the dark or we will crash into trees."
“可是，現(xiàn)在是晚上?！毙窃录饴暯兄f：“不能在黑暗中飛行，會撞到樹?！?/div>

"We're bats," said Mother Bat. " We can see in darkness. Come with us."
“我們是蝙蝠，在黑暗中看得見。跟我們來！”蝙蝠媽媽說。

Stellaluna was afraid, but she let go of the tree and dropped into the deep blue sky.
星月很害怕，但是她仍然從樹上中下，跳進(jìn)深藍(lán)色的夜空中。

Stellaluna could see. She felt as though rays of light shone from her eyes.
星月看得見，她覺得好像有兩道光從她的眼睛照射出去。

She was able to see everything in her path.
她能夠看見所有的東西。

Soon the bats found a mango tree, and Stellaluna ate as much of the fruit as she could hold.
不久，蝙蝠媽媽和星月找到一棵芒果樹。星月拼命的吃，吃了好多好多的水果。

"I’ll never eat another bug as long as I live,"
“我這輩子再也不吃蟲子了！”

cheered Stellaluna as she stuffed herself full. “I must tell Pip, Flitter, and Flap!"
星月吃了一肚子水果，興奮的說：“我一定要回去告訴皮皮、飛飛和翔翔?！?/div>

The next day Stellaluna went to visit the birds.?
第二天，星月回去找他們。

"Come with me and meet my bat family," said Stellauna.
“跟我來，去見我的蝙蝠家人?！毙窃抡f。

"Okay, let's go, “agreed Pip. "They hang by their feet and they fly at night and they eat the best food in the world,"
“好呀，我們走吧。”皮皮同意了。“蝙蝠用腳把自己倒掛起來，他們在晚上飛行。而且，蝙蝠吃的是世界上最好吃的食物！”

Stellaluna explained to the birds on tile way. As the birds flew among the bats, Flap said, "I feel upside down here."
星月在飛行時向那些鳥介紹蝙蝠家族。 當(dāng)小鳥們飛在蝙蝠群中的時候，翔翔說：“跟這群蝙蝠在一起，我覺得自己是倒掛著的！

So the birds hung by their feet. "Wait until dark," Stellaluna said excitedly.“We will fly at night."
所以，小鳥們都把自己倒掛在樹上。星月興奮的說：“等天黑以后，我們就可以一起在夜空中飛行！”

When night came Stellaluna flew away. Pip, Flitter, and Flap leapt from the tree to follow her.
夜晚來臨了，星月首先迎向夜空，皮皮、飛飛，和翔翔，也跟著星月，從樹梢飛了出去。

"I can't see a thing!"yelled Pip. "Neither can I," howled Flitter. "Aaeee!" shrieked Flap.
“啊！我什么都看不見！”皮皮尖叫?！拔乙彩牵　憋w飛哀嚎著。 “救命呀！”翔翔慘叫了一聲。

"They're going to crash," gasped Stellaluna. "I must rescue them!"'
“糟糕！他們要摔下去了，我得趕快救他們！”星月倒抽了一口涼氣。

Stellaluna swooped about, grabbing her friends in the air.
星月快速沖下去，接住他的朋友。

She lifted them to a tree, and the birds grasped a branch.
把他們放在一棵樹上，這些小鳥緊緊抓住樹枝。

Stellaluna hung from the limb above them.
星月則掛在上面的樹枝。

"We're safe," said Stellaluna. Then she sighed. "I wish you could see in the dark, too."
“我們安全了！”星月安慰小鳥。然后，她嘆了一口氣說：真希望你們在黑暗中也能看得見！

"We wish you could land on your feet," Flitter replied. Pip and Flap nodded.
“但愿你也能像我們一樣，用雙腳站在樹枝上?！憋w飛回答說。皮皮和翔翔也點(diǎn)點(diǎn)頭。

They perched in silence for a long time. " How can we be so different and feel so muchalike?" mused Flitter .
他們沉默了好長一段時間?！盀槭裁次覀?nèi)绱说牟煌?，感受卻如此相近呢？”飛飛若有所思的說。

"And how can we feel so different and he so much alike?" wondered Pip.
“為什么我們的感受如此不一樣，看起來卻如此相似呢？”飛飛也不解的說。

" I think this is quite a mystery," Flap chirped. "I agree," said Stellaluna.
“我想，這真是太不可思議了！”翔翔興奮的說?！拔乙策@么認(rèn)為！”星月回答。

"But we're friends . And that's a fact."
“但是，無論如何，我們都是朋友。這是永遠(yuǎn)也不會改變的事實(shí)！”
