這些動(dòng)詞均含有“停止”之意。

: 指逐漸、徐徐中止某種狀態(tài)的存在。書(shū)面用詞。

The storm has ceased.（暴風(fēng)雨停了。）

: 指暫時(shí)的、瞬間的停頓，隱含有再進(jìn)行之意。

He broke off and paused a moment.（他說(shuō)不下去了, 停了一會(huì)兒。）

: 指動(dòng)作、運(yùn)行、進(jìn)展等被停下來(lái)，含突然、斷然的意味。

He told the driver to stop the jeep.(他要司機(jī)把車(chē)停下來(lái)。)

: 側(cè)重突然地、決定性地終止、停止某一活動(dòng)。

The soldiers halted and rested from their march.(士兵們停止前進(jìn), 休息一下。)

: 指最終徹底停止某事，有時(shí)暗示遭到失敗或面臨挫折。

My father has quit smoking.(我父親已戒煙了。)
