英語專四常見詞辨析142：“地圖”上的“海峽”

channel, strait
這兩個(gè)名詞均含“海峽”之意。
channel : 指比strait長而寬的海峽。
The English Channel separates England and France.（英吉利海峽把英法兩國分隔開來。）
strait : 指短而窄的海峽。常用復(fù)數(shù)形式但作單數(shù)用。
The BeringStrait separates Asia and America.（白令海峽隔開了亞洲和美洲。）
小編注：Strait還有一個(gè)詞義是：窘迫，困難
例如：Now that father's lost his job, we're in dire straits.（父親失業(yè)了，我們陷入了極大的困境。）
chart, map, graph
這些名詞均有“地圖、圖”之意。
chart : 指航海地圖，也指圖表。
The course of a ship is marked on a chart.（輪船的航線是標(biāo)在航海圖上的。）
map : 指標(biāo)有國家大小、城市、鐵路、河流、山脈、海洋等的地圖。
This is a map in the scale of one-millionth.（這是一張比例尺為1比100萬的地圖。）
graph : 多指用縱橫坐標(biāo)之間關(guān)系的曲線表示兩個(gè)量之間的圖表。
He is drawing two graphs.（他正在畫兩張曲線圖。）
