common, ordinary, commonplace, general, usual, popular, universal

這些形容詞均含有“普通的，普遍的”之意。

common : 多用于指物，側(cè)重很常見，不稀奇。

This sort of weather is quite common.（這種天氣很常見。）

ordinary : 用于物，指每天發(fā)生，十分平淡無奇；用于人，指無特別之處，很一般。

That is only an ordinary incident.（這只不過是日常小事。）

commonplace : 強調(diào)缺少新意。

He is a commonplace person.（他是個凡夫俗子。）

general : 語氣強于common，側(cè)重大多如此，很少有例外情況。

The general opinion is in favour of us.（輿論普遍對我們有利。）

usual : 指常見常聞和常做的事或舉動，強調(diào)慣常性。

The plane did not fly the usual commercial route.（飛機沒有沿通常的商業(yè)航線飛。）

popular : 指適應(yīng)大眾愛好、需要，為大家所公認或接受。

“Mary” is a very popular name for a girl.（“瑪麗”是個很常見的女孩名字。）

universal與general同義，但語氣較強，側(cè)重對每個人或事物都適用，根本沒有例外。

These habits are both universal among mankind and peculiar to individuals.（這些習(xí)慣在全人類中很普遍, 而對個人來說又很獨特。）
