長(zhǎng)期以來(lái)，Times Square通常被翻譯成“時(shí)代廣場(chǎng)”，聽(tīng)起來(lái)也很大氣開(kāi)闊。這樣翻譯對(duì)嗎？我們先來(lái)看下面這段文字：

Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly erected Times Building, which is now called One Times Square and is the site of the annual ball drop on New Year's Eve.

Times Square前稱為朗埃克廣場(chǎng)，因《紐約時(shí)報(bào)》（The New York Times）而改名為時(shí)報(bào)廣場(chǎng)。

《紐約時(shí)報(bào)》1851年9月18日創(chuàng)刊，1904年紐約時(shí)報(bào)總部在Times Square附近建立了25層大廈?！都~約時(shí)報(bào)》發(fā)行人阿道夫·奧克斯成功游說(shuō)時(shí)任市長(zhǎng)的小喬治·布林頓·麥克萊倫（George B. McClellan, Jr.）在當(dāng)?shù)卦O(shè)立地鐵站，并在1904年4月8日將朗埃克廣場(chǎng)正式更名為時(shí)報(bào)廣場(chǎng)。

為了慶祝改名成功當(dāng)時(shí)舉辦了個(gè)大型新年晚會(huì)，然后這個(gè)晚會(huì)傳統(tǒng)就一年一年承繼下來(lái)了。新年前夕紐約時(shí)報(bào)廣場(chǎng)的降球儀式已經(jīng)成為美國(guó)新年傳統(tǒng)。每年的12月31日，在時(shí)報(bào)廣場(chǎng)1號(hào)大廈（One Times Square Plaza）會(huì)懸掛一顆90公斤的水晶彩球。
